What do you do when everything seems to be just falling apart? That’s the question I didn’t have the answer to back at the beginning of January. I felt alone, I was struggling with goals for the future, I was having a hard time with friends, I was losing hope… then my mom found this amazing program, Bridle Up Hope. A program for girls and women struggling with confidence and depression. Being here at Bridle Up Hope has been an incredible journey of self discovery. Working with horses and tori using the 7 habits for highly effective teens has taught me a lot, and I would like to share how setting goals and seeking mutual benefit have helped me find courage and confidence.
Habit 2 “begin with the end in mind” has been a game changer for me. It’s about defining what success looks like and setting clear goals. While talking about this habit I was struggling with education and what to do with school. I have been back and forth with attending public school and homeschool, and was searching for a way to complete high school and graduate with my diploma. Talking it through with my mom and making clear goals I can happily say I will be graduating with my high school diploma this year. One of my biggest challenges was learning how to canter. The first time I tried, I was terrified. The speed and power of the horse was overwhelming. But I remembered my “end in mind” to be a good rider who could communicate effectively with the horse. With that goal, I focused on staying balanced and trusting my horse, and listening to my instructor Tori. Tori was an incredible mentor, she not only taught me how to ride but she helped me navigate some tough personal challenges. Her kindness and guidance have shown me the importance of someone who believes in you and helps you see your potential.
Going back to the original question at the beginning, "What do you do when everything seems to be falling apart?” The answer is… take a step back, remember who you are, how far you’ve come and remind yourself you’ve got this. Go back and revisit your goals, add to them or take away. Talk to the people close to you, confide in them because they know you best and will give you encouragement that no one else can. I am truly grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to attend this program and for all the wonderful people who have made it possible, thank you!
